Asbestos Exposure

Coming into contact with asbestos can cause a rare form of cancer known as mesothelioma.  Many men and women are diagnosed with mesothelioma every year.  The biggest problem with asbestos is that the fibers can lay dormant inside of you for decades without being diagnosed.  Asbestos is known to cause different types of cancer including lung cancer, laryngeal cancer, esophageal cancer, colon cancer, and rectal cancer.  If you have been diagnosed with any of these after being exposed to asbestos, you might have a claim against the companies that manufactured the asbestos, or against the owner of the building or product containing asbestos.

Mesothelioma has a long latency period.  It can last anywhere from 15-50 years, which means one could be exposed to asbestos and then develop mesothelioma 50 years later. The average latency period is approximately 35-40 years.

Some clinical signs of the disease include:

  • Coughing
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Pain in the chest and abdominal regions, which is generally unresponsive to analgesics
  • Pleural effusions (fluid in the chest cavity)
  • Progressive loss of appetite and weight loss
